My introduction into the pistol world has been 9mm. Soft shooting and cheap to shoot a lot as it relates to working on being proficient with a pistol. Anyway… after a couple of years practicing with the 9s, and getting bit by the gun bug I want to add a .45 to the lineup. I have a Sig P226 extreme in 9mm. Love it. It’s my favorite 9. As I look at .45 options I’m drawn to the P227. I find myself a little torn between the enhanced elite full size and the SAS gen 2 carry. Part of my draw to these particular models is that they have the short reach and short reset trigger like my 226 extreme. I’m leaning towards the SAS gen 2 carry. I can live without the rail on the front. My only question/hesitation is on how they shoot. The gen 2 carry model is only ½” shorter. Even though I’ve been shooting my 9mms for a couple years I’m kind of a newb to the whole pistol thing. Is that slightly shorter length going to make the gen 2 carry model have more noticeable muzzle flip? More challenging to be accurate with? Not a soft as shooter than the full size version? If so is it negligible? That’s my main question. Love to hear from someone that has both a full size and carry version. Open to other thoughts and ideas on these versions and the P227 in general. Thanks, Keith

I have the full size 227 fo HD and I have a SAS Gen 2 for carry. FWIW the SAS feels better balanced for me and I shoot it quicker and more accurately. I can say the same for the 229 vs 226 in 9mm as well. I like the shorter guns balance better. I have 3 227s and they all have been great shooters and trouble free. Enjoy whichever 227 you end up with.

I have been a dedicated Sig shooter for about 15 years. I have owned or carried just about everything in the classic Sig lineup in .380, 9mm, .40, and .45. My experience with the P227 was less than stellar in comparison to the P220. I found that the P227 had much less control to it, and it was very easy to throw shots and have the groupings walk around on you. I attribute it to the wider and more rounded grip(more so than the P226), and the grip angle. Bench rest accuracy was also poor in comparison to the P220. I have two coworkers who shoot P220s in the competition world. One borrowed mine, and the other had bought his own P227 to try out. They all came to the same conclusions as me, and continue using their P220s. I'm not saying the P227 is a lost cause, but it needs some mods to make it run as well as the P220. I think an all stainless frame elite P227 would be a good start, with an aftermarket Hogue style rubber grip(if they can make one thin enough). But that isn't available right now, and nothing like it is on the horizon. Personally I don't think you are missing anything by branching out from 9mm(other than using up retirement money). All the major service calibers basically do the same thing, and there isn't much to be gained by going from 9mm to .40, .45, .357.....etc. I think you are better off putting your resources into 9mm.

If these are the reasons to look at these two specifically, just realize that the short reach trigger and SRT (short reset trigger) can be added to any model fairly easily. Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view. Complacency sucks…

My experience with the 227 is the exact opposite as Fuego220. I find the 227 an excellent and very controllable shooter. I have normal large size hands and the wider grips is my preference to the thinner grips like the 220. Better balance for me with the weak hand I can get on the grip. I have the 227 carry which is the same size as the sas. I dropped the srt trigger in it and it's a great shooting 45. Ended up selling my glock 30s and PPQ 45 because of it.

Love my SAS P227s. Also had the full size P227s, but they're gone now. They are very controllable and soft shooting, full or carry size. The only thing I hate about it is the thin/short trigger, which was promptly replaced with old fatty. Q

Welcome to the Forum I find the P227 to be quite controllable and equally as accurate as any of my P220s. Like 12131 I also dislike the Short Trigger and usually replace them with the standard trigger. If you are in the South Florida area, I would gladly meet you at the range and let you try my P227. It is a standard size, not the SAS You might want to complete your registration information. I also own both the full and SAS models, and if you don't need a rail I'd definitely recommend the SAS. The SAS is a sweet shooter. Count me in for not liking the Short Trigger, I much prefer the Gray Guns Adjustable Intermediate Trigger. https://grayguns.com/product/p...ntermediate-trigger/ I'm also not a fan of the E2 grips, I would highly recommend the Houge G10 grips on the P227. It make such a pronounced improvement in my humble opinion. https://www.hogueinc.com/store...10-solid-black/18696 https://www.sigsauer.com/store...-g10-lite-black.html Not my P227 but this shows the G10 with the Gray Trigger:

Thanks for all thoughts and info. There are reviews and info to be found on the P227. That said, it just doesn’t seem to be super popular with endless discussions and reviews. I dig it. I like the sa/da. I like that it’s metal and has some heft to it. Man. When did I get old school? I do very much appreciate the thoughts and feedback. I got to hold the standard nitron version at a local gun store and the sas carry version at the range I go to. I’m kind of leaning towards the sas gen 2 carry version. Good time to buy too. The wife’s out of town visiting her sister. At some point in the not too distant future, I’ll be like… What?! This old thing? Just kidding on that. I’m up front with her on those things. It’s more like, she got plane tickets to see your sister, I got $ to put in the 227 fund. Win, win. Everyone’s happy.

I'm with you on that one and have already been scoping that out. I'm a huge fan of the hogue grips. Thanks for your feedback. Very helpful.

Both of mine are full size, Equinox and Tacops. Controllable, soft shooting and accurate. I suspect you will find the SAS Gen 2 to be the same. While I do not mind the original trigger, I prefer G10 grips over the E2 grips. “There is love in me the likes of which you’ve never seen. I have the G10 on my first 227 SAS, but the E2 on my second one I just got from the Classifieds. Interestingly, on the P227, I like the E2 more. The G10 looks good, but the E2 just feels better. The E2 one also has the GGI P-SPIT on it. Q

I had the SAS for about 6 months last year. Great shooter, felt good in the hand, but giant in the holster. Tried to make it work as a duty gun, but ended up returning to the p220 elite. The extra bulk wasn't worth the extra 2 rounds. "We should bring back dueling, it would improve manners." -Ed Abbey

If you're wanting a Sig 45 then you should also look at the P220 line. Get the one that feels best to you. The P227 only holds 2 more rounds than the P220 so capacity is negligibly different. The P227 does feel very close to the P226 so you might like that best. There is quite a bit of difference in feel between the grips that you can come on or be put on the P220 so make sure you try several different ones out. My favorite is the standard grip on the 2000ish era P220s, then next would be the G10 grips. I've not found a P220 with E2 grips yet so I wonder what those are like. I liked the E2 grips on the P227 and especially on the P229-1, so I bought a set to put on my old 1990ish P226. I could take them or leave them on the P226 but on the p229 wow. Except to carry, I carried my P226 with E2 grips 1 time, just once, it about wore a hole in my side. My point is, there are lots of different combinations of Sig 45s, if you can, try several before you pick. Or be like me and get a bunch of them.
